A frequent question I hear in my practice is, "Do I need a referral to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon or another specialist?" Here's the answer and an explanation: Technically, the answer is "No, you don't strictly need one," but it is highly recommended. Let me explain further...
Strictly speaking having a GP referral to see Dr Cleary (specialist) is not required. However, you will not be eligible for the Australian Government medicare rebates for your consultations or surgery. Your GP is also very experienced at treating orthopaedic conditons in their early stages and often exhausts non-surgical options before a referral to a specialist is made.
Having your GP and specialist working together to help your condition is always the best approach.
